History
The early history of Moncton dates back to its establishment by Captain John Ritchie in 1739. Initially known as ‘Moncktown,’ the settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the banks of the Petitcodiac monctoncasino.ca River, which provided a means for trade and commerce with other regions. The name change from Monckton to Moncton took place later.
